We all got hooked into something in this lockdown – gaming, videography, photography, cooking, learning a musical instrument, workout… there is no ending to it.
Gaming being an extremely popular hobby and it seems like an amazing prospect to turn your hobby of video games, into a career or perhaps learn a new skill. Here, I will address the most frequently asked question by those who are interested (to me) about ‘making of games’
Overview – Why am I phrasing it as ‘making of games’? Games are developed and designed. While playing a video game have you wondered what is the whole art behind creating it? Let me explain in brief.
Game designers are involved in all the creative aspects of making a game. Designers are like creators – creating compelling stories, goals, rules, and challenges. Think of it as if they are the storytellers but so much more than that.
Game developers or programmers are responsible for the actual coding and technical aspects of putting a game together. They are like crafters: the art of creating games and describes the design, development, and release of a game are in their hands.
Note: I am just giving a basic idea, to learn more you could google it ( I will update for each topic separately later)
Lets get started.
Am I capable enough? – This question is by all you are insecure about starting a course. To be honest, it can be challenging because basically it is a whole different world but it is rewarding. Give it a go, and trust me, you won’t regret it.
.How did you develop games? – I am a user of Unity 3d. It is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies.
Where did you learn it from? Is it paid?– I started learning from Udemy at first (2017) and then there were many free courses on game development with Unity. Also, Unity gives you a wide range of learning collections, and then there is always youTube. There are various versions of Unity where there is also a free version i.e, individual use – one including for students and another one for personal; that provides more than enough tools for beginners and I would suggest you should use the free version.
How long will it take to learn? Honestly, depends on you. you could be a slacker or a hard worker, or perhaps you are already good at programming or you are new to it, it depends. Like I said it’s a whole new journey.
What programming language is mostly used? – Java and C++ are common choices. If you know you want to work in Unity, C# is a good option.
Is it necessary to know to code? – It can definitely help, but coding isn’t necessary to design games (especially if you know people (or have a team) who can code. There are also game engines that let you develop games without knowing any code. But for developers, they are the programmers.
Do you need a degree to learn these courses? – No. Build a great portfolio and you’ll have a much better time breaking into the industry.
How competitive is it in this line? – It is competitive. Supply for aspiring designers is up, but the demand for them is low. Still, there are jobs out there!
Earnings? – For game developers ₹508K / yr and ₹559K / yr for game designers (approx. from lastest source)
I have learned game development out of complete curiosity. Wonder how it feels to walk into a galaxy – mesmerizing. That’s what it felt like when I started knowing more about it, learning the skills to beautifully craft games. You watch the characters move, walk, talk as if you breathed life into an object (by coding) and that’s fascinating.
